Basic research
VIVIT engages in basic research by cultivating cell lines to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying obesity-related and other diseases.
Beyond its role as a clinical research center, the VIVIT engages in basic research, in particular into the origins of obesity-related illnesses. For this purpose, adipocytes are cultured in VIVIT’s laboratory under different conditions, for instance, in a low-oxygen environment, to mimic the effects of oxygen deprivation on adipose tissue. This state of chronic hypoxia is known to trigger inflammatory reactions and metabolic changes, uncovering mechanisms underlying obesity-related diseases. Another focus is on cancer research. In this context, colon and gastric cancer cell lines are cultivated to investigate the influence of various environmental conditions, such as oxygen deprivation or phytochemical effects.
